The Journal Assignment for Unit 1 is Due on Wednesday July14th by 11:59 pm; see below for assigned readings and questions:
Assigned Readings for Unit 1 Journal Assignment:
Click on UMass Library Materials in the Journals Folder to access the following two opposing viewpoints:
“High Fructose Corn Syrup is Unsafe in Any Amount”
“There is No Evidence that High Fructose Corn Syrup is Unsafe.”
Assigned Questions for all Journal Assignments:
Which title of the assigned readings were you more apt to agree with BEFORE you read the two opposing viewpoints? AFTER reading the two viewpoints did either of their arguments/claims change your opinion, strengthen or weaken your position? How so? If not, why not?
What in your opinion are the strongest AND weakest arguments or claims of EACH viewpoint? Does EACH of the viewpoints present scientific evidence to support their arguments/claims?
Conduct an on-line search of scientific literature in library databases/e-journals to examine the strongest OR weakest arguments/claims of a viewpoint you identified in question number two. Based on your findings, provide one reference citation for a scientific article from a peer reviewed journal that supports OR disproves the science behind ONE of these arguments/claims of the viewpoints (your answer should include a total of 1 citation). Briefly summarize your findings.
Personal Reflection: After considering your research findings from question three, describe the thought process that now brings you to your final opinion in relation to the two opposing viewpoints. Did your research impact your final position? If so how? If not, why not?
Grading Rubric Checklist – Key elements to include
An excellent and outstanding journal assignment submission will be one that has addressed these key elements:
Answered all questions and elaborated as needed, adding details and examples when appropriate
Provided thorough detailed description of your opinion formation & changes that may occur
Clearly explained the thought process behind your selection of strongest & weakest arguments for each viewpoint
Identified and analyzed the scientific evidence used in both viewpoints
Excellent selection of peer reviewed journal articles and use of proper citations
If you decide to include an older article for historical purposes also provide an article with more current findings (2016-2020). An important part of this exercise is to read both historical and recent research to better understand both the background information and up-to-date findings on controversial scientific topics.
Well summarized findings of peer reviewed journal article and final reflection
In addition to summarizing the findings of your journal article, briefly skim over other similar research so you can comment on how the findings of your journal article relate to the overall body of evidence that currently exists on your topic.
** There are no requirements for length (2 – 2.5 pages with citations are the most common submissions). Your responses may be brief and concise as long as your submission answers all the questions and addresses all the aspects with sufficient detail as highlighted above in the grading rubric checklist.**
