1.1 Coursework 1 Option 2: in-depth structured literature review
This option is to allow you to demonstrate your ability to search for and locate appropriate material, also how to organise, analyse, critique and interpret what you find. This will involve use of policy, research and theory and communicating what the evaluation of this and any gaps you have identified, may mean for a variety of stakeholders.
The main aim of a dissertation selected under Option 2 is to allow you to demonstrate not only your critical skills in analysing and evaluating scholarly and research-based material but to manage a large amount of information in a systematic/structured manner. You will also be assessed on your ability to present a logical and coherent account.
1.1.1 Conduct a structured literature review
In conducting your investigation, you will be expected to include the elements highlighted in the assignment briefing. You should also include acknowledgements and appendices. Where appropriate, figures or tables containing summary information (search terms, search flow chart, tables of study characteristics and results etc.) are permissible in the main body or as appendices. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) is often recommended in journal contributor guidance and tables are often used to summarise design features/limitations. The content of tables does not add to the assignment word count, but this should not be abused.
1.1.2 Structure and Presentation of Coursework 1 Option 2
Most guidelines for authors will normally ask for a format similar to the following, nevertheless journals do vary, so read the journal’s guidance and use carefully.
Title: Reflects the main variables/aim
Abstract: Includes the review question and aim, summary of method, main results of review obtained and main conclusion or recommendation.
Introduction: Highlights the context, rationale, relevance and importance of the topic for investigation (includes related literature). Also, research question, initial definitions and finishes with specific aims of the review.
Methods: Includes a specific search question, systematic search strategy, inclusion, exclusion criteria, search history and description of format / structure of review (brief tables or flow charts may be used) and highlights appraisal/evaluation system used.
Findings: Normally first introduces the range of articles found (quantity, designs and aims), and continues with an organized overview and critical analysis and evaluation of the evidence for the current state of knowledge on the selected topic. (summary tables may be included but appropriate reference to these is noted within the main text e.g. table 1, table 2).
Discussion: Contains an interpretation of the results, the results related to other work in the area, application of results and relevance of findings. Discusses the issues raised and the implications for research, practice and development and limitations of the review.
Conclusion: Derived from the evaluation of the major issues identified and normally includes recommendations for stakeholders.
References: Please note that some journals may limit the number of references allowed. For the purposes of this coursework there is no limit to the number of references used.
