• the definition and purpose of the MI listening skill(s) and technique(s) being demonstrated
• when and with whom the technique(s) may be most effective
• references for further information (a minimum of three (3) references)
You will not be evaluated on how effective your interaction is in terms of an outcome, but rather on how seriously you attempt to use the MI listening skill(s) and technique(s) and the quality of the didactic handout.
A rubric for the assignment will be provided, and the criteria for grading include:
• Level of effort utilized to engage in an appropriate MI listening process
• Level of effort utilized to demonstrate the technique or approach
• Content and quality of the didactic handout
the The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the use of Motivational Interviewing basic listening skills and techniques. The instructor will assign each student with a client case. Students will be responsible to construct and facilitate a client interview with the instructor using the case. Each interview will include use of at least three basic MI listening skills (Open-ended questions, Affirm, Reflective Listening, Summarize) and one MI technique (ie. asking permission, eliciting change talk, exploring importance, normalizing, decisional balance, supporting self-efficacy, readiness to change ruler, or advice/feedback).
