1.) Your Speech should be at least 3-5 minutes. Prepare an outline for your speech. Submit your outline; send a link of your speech to me with the outline AND via email (see recording instructions below). Study the “How to Outline” items found in this Chapter 2 folder. Link: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/the_writing_process/developing_an_outline/types_of_outlines.html We will use alphanumeric outlining for all our speeches in COMM 201. See pages 364-369 in your textbook for examples. You may use note cards to aid your presentation. You will not be asked to memorize speeches in this class. Try not to write the entire speech on notes, though, because then there is the tendency of reading the speech to us (which hinders your eye contact with the audience).
2.) Your speech should contain an Introduction, Body and a Conclusion. Again, check your textbook examples.
3.) The body of your speech should address the following: You are self-reflecting, but will also ask another person (or persons) how they perceive you. You may ask anyone you want to about how they perceive you, but I will say that my former students caution against asking your “ex” – one student said his “ex” kept him on the phone for 45 minutes mainly telling him everything he needs to change about himself. He said it was a brutal conversation, so he decided to call his mom and use her perceptions instead.
*4, 5 and 6 I added my answers in the parentheses on what I would say. You can add the details in the speech to make it sound good. Number 7 just choose three of those words to incorporate into the speech.
4.) The way I see myself is… (a person who cares about others and very flexible) and the way my friend or family member sees (perceives) me is… (a quiet person who does his own thing)
5.) What I like about myself is… (my heart and concern for others) and what my friend or family member likes about me is… (the passion that I have for helping others)
6.) If I could change anything about myself, I would change… how quiet I am) and if my friend or family member could change anything about me it would be… (Not to worry about things so much)
7.) Your speech must incorporate and illustrate at least 3 terms from Chapter 2: (You MUST say the 3 names of your terms, but you do not need to give definitions for the terms themselves.) Examples are terms like self-awareness, self-concept, self-esteem, self-fulfilling prophecies, culture—beliefs, attitude, values, practices, faces and masks, stereotypes, and empathy.
8.) Visual aid required! Show an item that represents something about who you are. Ex: A rubber band for flexibility; a photo of your hero; a meaningful tattoo you have; a special award; etc. Be sure to explain why this item represents something about you.
Be as honest as you feel comfortable. It is up to you as to how you would like to give this speech. You may want to play the guitar and sing; you may wish to write a poem or short story (however, make sure you are writing and speaking in 1st person); you may want to act as if you were on stage in a play, or you may feel most comfortable just talking to your audience in conversational style. Be as creative as you want to be!
This assignment is worth up to 100 points. See the rubric for this assignment below. There are 10 categories of scoring, including the correct outline format, how you organize the body of the speech, how you fulfilled all of the assignment specifications, and several delivery categories. Study the rubric carefully. Use it as a checklist to make sure you didn’t forget anything.
