Assignment Instructions:
1. Once you have read Federalist #10 and #51, reviewed the lesson slides, and listened to the audio review posted by Professor Rivera, post your 250 word minimum initial response to the following:
Please respond to each of these four parts in their own paragraphs – not one large paragraph
Explain what a faction is (refer to Federalist 10 for this) and describe why James Madison believes that factions threaten civil society
Would it be possible to design a society with no factions? If so, how? If not, why not?
Clarify the difference between a democracy and republic (note, Madison refers to democracy using the terminology “pure democracy”)
Explain Madison’s logic behind the separation of powers as described in Federalist 51. Do you agree that it is necessary to divide and decentralize power when designing government? Why? Why not?
2. Post at least one reply directly engaging with a fellow student’s initial response. Responses should be meaningful and engage in a dialogue with your classmate. Simply agreeing or disagreeing is not sufficient. For example you might consider the following: What is compelling about your classmate’s post? Do you agree/disagree with their analysis? Why? Are there aspects of their analysis that are missing details that could develop their claims further?
Reminder! Discussion etiquette:
During the course of this semester, we will discuss several controversial and sensitive topics which may include affirmative action, gay rights, separation of church and state, abortion, illegal immigration, and more. Please refrain from using derogatory words or insensitive language that may upset your fellow online classmates. While expressions of differing opinions and viewpoints are encouraged, personal attacks against classmates or use of derogatory and hurtful language is strictly prohibited. If I see anyone using demeaning terms or personal attacks, I will warn that person and ask him/her to apologize. If that person repeats the behavior again, he/she will be reported via a student conduct report.
