Due to elimination complexities, the lives of both patient and family members are disrupted. Both the family and patient undergo through social , emotional as well as financial constrains. Patients experience emotional stress as they think that their health will never improve and obtain normality again. Family relationships may be broken due to frustration. There are also feelings of guilt and loss among patients and their families. The nurse supports patient’s psychological and emotional needs by listening to the patient and assisting them with advice on mechanisms to use in order to cope with the situation.(Gottfredson,1997)
The nurse can also share with both the family members and the patient on the conditions that will be faced in future and the importance of being calm while interacting with each other. The nurse can also encourage them to join other groups of people who are undergoing through the same situation. An example is a situation where by a patient has under gone through stroke and has been bed ridden for more than five months which has resulted to psychological problems. The nurse provides emotional support to such person as well as explains to them any conditions that may arise and how to cope with the situations. (Kemppainen, V., Tossavainen, K., & Turunen, H. 2013)

Elimination complexities can impact patients and their families. Incontinence can decreased the patient’s quality of life. It can cause the patient to be unable to control their bladder and/or bowels. They may or may not be able to clean themselves after accidents, which would create a burden for family. Affects can be physical, psychosocial, and economic on the patient and their families (Emmons & Robinson, 2014). While the nurse can provide resources such as psychological and financial support for the patient and their family, the nurse can also education and encourage the patient to regain independence and possible restoration of function. In the case of incontinence, the nurse can work with the patient to retrain the bowels and assist the patient to the bathroom more frequently. Also, encouragement of early treatment and interventions can be beneficial to patients (Whitney, 2018). Patient and family education regarding condition, medication management, and support resources are important of the nurse to introduce. Education can give patient’s the feeling of confidence and reassurance and can assist with their emotional and psychological support. The patient may experience intimate relationship issues due to incontinence, and should be screened for poor sexual quality of life and depression (Saiki & Meize-Grochowski, 2017).

Elimination complexities are defined as medical conditions the prevent a patient from ridding the body of waste effectively. People suffering from incontinence often suffer from increased financial burden, social isolation, and decreased quality of life (Li et al., 2019). The patient and family may be less likely to attend social functions due to smell or likelihood of an accident due to incontinence. Financial disaster awaits if the patient or family member loses a job due to the condition, with even more stress financially due to increased cost of care such as supplies and medical care. Psychologically, the patient and family may feel experience depression or anxiety due to pain or other symptoms of the condition. Patients may fear being isolated or ridiculed due to elimination complexities. Research shows that the level of shame and embarrassment experienced with urinary incontinence alone is significantly higher than rates of many conditions such as depression and cancer (Elenskaia et al., 2011).
Nurses can help their patients develop resiliency by offering care and support, providing resources, setting goals for recovery and independence, encouraging connections with others, assisting the patient to develop and maintain life skills, and encouraging physical and occupational therapy when recommended by the doctor (Whitney, 2018). It is crucial that nurses become a source of education for these patients and their families. Therapy and support groups could be an excellent resource to help the patient and family overcome the psychological and social issues they may face. Having people to talk to, some of whom are suffering from the same conditions they are, may help the patient have a better outlook. Education for medications or the use of supplies such as ostomy, catheters, and briefs can help the patient and family learn to reduce the likelihood of public embarrassment. In any case, the patient needs to know that their healthcare team is there for them when needed, and it is important to keep their appointments.

Functional nursing patterns play an important role in process of assisting the nurse develop an understanding of the past and the current state of health for their patients. It is through understanding and the use of the functional patterns that nurses are able to get a comprehensive analysis of the condition of the patient, thus the nurse can be able to administer care which is based on evidence and also patient centered. Furthermore, it is through functional patterns that nurses are able to conduct detailed examination and as of such the patients questions which bears a large deal of relevance. In that instance, the nurse will be able to make an informed diagnosis which will help in administering the right medication to treat the patient based on his or her present and past medication conditions.(Kriegler, N. F., & Harton, M. K. 1992).
Functional health patterns include a format for admission assessment and a database for nursing diagnosis and has two steps for assessment; history taking and examination. It provides subjective data in the form of verbal reports which are elicited by questions that assist clients to talk about the history and current status of their health and health management.
A disease like Malaria has been associated with elimination complexity; that is the functional pattern can be effectively utilized to tackle the disease. Some of the symptoms that are evident in the case of malaria are also present for other different disease which have not been associated with the elimination complexity. In that case, functional patterns are used to determine, rule out other ailments. For example both malaria and typhoid have fever has one of the symptoms for the disease.(Klepac, P., Metcalf, C. J., McLean, A. R., & Hampson, K.2013).

Functional health pattern model was developed to assist nurses during assessment gather information in a systemic fashion to help them understand the patient’s health history and current health status (Karaca, 2016). The nurse can get timeline information to understand the patient’s history and possible contributions to the current state of health. Data gathered can help with nurse with planning the patient’s care and developing nursing diagnosis for the patient. For example, in a patient with chronic kidney disease, the nurse can use functional health patterns for understand the patient’s history relating to the kidney disease such as the diagnosis of diabetes and other health conditions relating to the kidneys. Using the functional health patterns will assist the nurse in understanding the patient’s health needs such as being at risk for hyper/hypoglycemia and self-care deficit (Avci Kirpitci, et al., n.d.). Understanding the patient’s needs and health status can help with provided holistic personal care for the patient and can lead to positive patient outcomes.

Discussion question/Participation #6
A functional health pattern is a framework that can be used by a nurse to conduct a comprehensive health assessment on their patient through which the nurse can gain an understanding of the general health of the patient in terms of past and present medical issues. This method can be used to assess elimination complexities experienced by the patient as well as any potential causes such as the patient’s dietary habits or health conditions. Gordon’s health functional patterns help nurses to perform detailed assessments and gather complete patient information which facilitates the nurse’s ability to make an informed nursing diagnosis and provide care for patients based on evidence-based practice (Khatiban et al., 2019). Functional health patterns can also help determine the baseline of the patient so interventions can be monitored for effectiveness.
Pancreatitis would be an example of an elimination complexity that can be evaluated using a functional health pattern. Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas caused by digestive enzymes that can cause excruciating pain in the mid-epigastric region of the abdomen (Whitney, 2018). It can be caused by many different sources such as excessive alcohol consumption or obesity. The nurse could use a functional health pattern assessment to determine the cause of this condition in the patient. From there the patient can be educated about the necessary lifestyle changes, what complications may occur, and how to manage pancreatitis.
