Olaudah Equiano believes the most offensive element of slavery to the readers are how slaves were mistreated. Since the moment Africans come in contact with Slavers, they were exposed to the most inhuman treatment unimaginable. Africans enslaved endured both physical and emotional trauma. The physical drama of being wiped for disobedient and emotionally scared form not being able to see their family again. “without giving us time to cry out… they stopped our mouth… and carry us as far as they could.”[1] Equiano first encounter with the slayer, shows his physical pain of being stopped on and his sister being carried away impacted him mentally. Equiano’s writing not only revealed that slaves were physical abuse but also illustrated the emotional abuses they suffered.

Olaudah Equiano seems to think that slavery is evil and it was important to inform the world of what he and many others lived through. He believed that telling the people about the enslavement of children would outrage the readers the most. Equiano wanted to inform his readers of the disruption of family and community because of the slavery movement. He was trying to show us the horrors of the children being ripped away from their families and not having any control over it. “…it was my fate to be thus attacked, and to be carried off, when none of the grown people were nigh.” His writing is very powerful because he wrote this to show that it wasn’t just adults who were being sold into slavery, but also innocent children.
